RGAA AGM 2019

Our 2019 Annual General Meeting will take place on Sunday January 27th at 3pm in the Clubhouse

The AGM is an open meeting for all those with an interest in the future of Rockland GAA. If you feel you have something to contribute don't sit on the sidelines and complain about it. Attend the AGM and get involved, put your ideas forward - get your point across. Have your say in the future of the Green & White. Listen to what is going on inside your club. Learn what it takes to run the club effectively. Meet the decision makers - even become a decision maker. This is not a closed forum.

Remember everyone is a volunteer, everyone has a part to play. Find out what it takes to become an active volunteer. Find out what the club is doing for you, your children and your community.

Maybe you are a former player or coach and want to get involved again. Maybe you are a student and are looking for areas to improve your CV. Perhaps your family has a long standing association with the club but you are disconnected and want to get involved. Don't listen to those telling you "it takes up so much of your time" - remember why you first became involved with the club - the GAA is one big family who are there for each other.

In no other world will you have the bond that is developed through your club so don't let the critics put you off and don't allow them the forum to present inaccuracies about the teams or the club. Opinions are always welcome throughout the year and there is no better forum for it than the AGM.

So if you are a player, coach, manager, parent, supporter, sponsor, volunteer or simply would like to know more, then this year's AGM is for you and we want you all there.

Come along and bring a friend

RGAA SCHOOLS PROGRAM - THANK YOU LINCOLN

What a school. This week was the final week of the GAA 5 Star Program in Lincoln Elementary. We finished off with a mini Quick Handball Tournament, 3v2 Keep Away, 5v5 Keep Away and a Go Games Mini Blitz. Throughout our time with the Lions we have covered every area of the GAA 5 Star initiative. This wouldn't have been possible without the support, enthusiasm and hard work of Principal Mrs Kathleenann Cool and PE Teacher Mrs Diana Gillule, as well as all the teachers and support staff within the school. The VIP Children who came into every lesson with smiles on their faces and ears open ready to listen, learn and have FUN playing Gaelic Games were an absolute pleasure to work with. This is not the end of our relationship with Lincoln, it's only the beginning. Thank you to everyone for fully embracing the program and to Croke Park for giving Rockland GAA & Lincoln Ave this fantastic opportunity to always be remembered as the first GAA 5 Star Center outside Ireland. Congratulations to all the Lincoln Lions.

RGAA SCHOOLS PROGRAM OBSERVATION

On Tuesday last November 27th, our GDO Owen Mooney had a few visitors during his GAA 5 Star Center lessons with Lincoln Elementary. Principal, Mrs Kathleenann Cool and Head of PE, Mrs Diana Gillule welcomed Mrs Diana Musich, Assistant Superintendent for Human Relations & Community Services and Dr. Robert Roelle, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, as well as Pearl River District Superintendent, Mr Marco Pochintesta to observe some of the activities the children are involved in as part of being a 5 Star Center and they were all impressed with how well the GAA 5 Star initiative complements the work of the classroom teachers through its use of cross curriculum themes. Thank you to Marco, Diana and Robert for coming to see us and as always thank you to Mrs Cool and Mrs Gillule for all your support

GAA Foundation Coach Education Course

We are running a GAA Foundation Coach Education Course next month

DATE - Saturday November 17th
TIME - 9am to 2pm
VENUE - RGAA Multi Purpose Room
COST - FREE

This course is open to anyone ages 16 Years & Over / Parents / Volunteers / Beginner Coaches and everyone in between. The Foundation Award is the introductory award for coaches of Gaelic Games. The course is aimed at beginner coaches/parents and will enable participants to assist a coach in the organisation of activities to further enhance the players skills at practice and/or at home.

The course covers four key modules, as well as introductory and conclusion modules. These four modules are:

- Introduction to Games
- Skill Development
- Movement Skills
- Coaching Children, Youths and Adults

This course is very worthwhile and we would encourage anyone to take part. It's a great way to get to know different components of coaching that can help you as a coach and player and also as a parent as it enables you to gain a different perspective on the basic levels of coaching, so that you can help your child when they practice at home.

CIARAN DALTON - CLOSE UP

We profile another one of our young players in Ciaran Dalton. Ciaran attends Pearl River High School and he is an extremely capable student and sportsman. Ciaran had a great few months recently playing for Rockland GAA at CYC, as well as New York Fèile Football and Hurling Teams in Ireland. He also played a key role with his New York Red Bulls team in reaching the Semi Final of the ICC Futures Tournament in Florida, which was televised live on ESPN. Representative team from all over the United States came up against some of the best youth teams from Europe; Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Celtic and Atlético Madrid to name a few.

Research shows the many benefits of playing multiple sports and Ciaran certainly fits into that category as he currently plays Gaelic Football and Hurling for us, as well as playing Soccer for New York Red Bull's and Basketball. In his own words "I think it is definitely important to play more than one sport when you are a kid because it helps you keep more active, meet more people, and prevents injures from doing the same thing over and over."

Being so young and involved in so many sports, there's always the chance that school work can become neglected. Not with Ciaran though as he goes onto say "It is sometimes challenging to manage your time with school, family, friends, and sport because I am at soccer practice almost every night of the week but school always has to come first so I try to do my homework and study as soon as I get home so I do well in school. On the weekends is usually when I get to be with my friends or do things with my family."

He is also always willing to learn and improve. As soon as he got back from the ICC Tournament in Florida he was desperate to take part in our 3 Day Player Development Camp, where our young players players had the pleasure of learning from Joe McMahon, Pat Murray, Mickey Coleman, Micky Quigg and Ryan Daly.

Ciaran also gives back to the club in getting involved in our RGAA Summer Camp as a Volunteer and Young Coach for the second year in a row.

We are so fortunate to have so many of our young people giving their time to make sure our Summer Camp and other events become a success.

Ciaran would like to thank all his coaches, team mates, friends and especially his family for all the support they give him

KELLY ANN HENRY - CLOSE UP

Our very own jet setting Ladies Footballer Kelly Ann Henry has been making waves across the water in Ireland. This is no surprise to everyone who knows Kelly Ann. She is currently getting ready for an All Ireland Intermediate Semi Final against Tyrone. Our loss has been Curry GAA Sligo's gain. Kelly, who studies Physio Therapy at UCD, was due to be back in New York this summer. However an invitation from Sligo Ladies Football manager Paddy Henry to join the panel was too good an opportunity to turn down. After speaking with her family she decided to stay in Ireland. Her debut was against Roscommon in the Connacht Final and she has since played against Longford and Wicklow respectively.
Kelly Ann is a great role model. She was one of our lead coaches in our RGAA Summer Camp in 2017 and it's great to see her younger sisters, Mary Kate and Sinead, following on her footsteps at this years Camp and it was great to see her when she visited Camp this year during a short break home. Kelly Ann was an integral member of our Junior Ladies Team when they clinched the Junior Title in 2017. Although we'd love to have her back we're extremely proud of her representing Sligo LGFA. Everyone in Rockland GAA, New York and beyond would like to wish Kelly Ann and the entire Sligo LGFA panel all the best this Saturday in their All Ireland Intermediate Semi Final against Tyrone. The game throws in at 4pm in Ballyshannon and will be shown live on the Ladies Gaelic Football Facebook Page. Thank you to the Sligo Weekender Newspaper for the piece in the picture and massive thanks to Kelly Ann's extended family, friends, Curry GFC, Sligo LGFA and UCD for looking after our girl
