GAA Foundation Coach Education Course

We are running a GAA Foundation Coach Education Course next month

DATE - Saturday November 17th
TIME - 9am to 2pm
VENUE - RGAA Multi Purpose Room

This course is open to anyone ages 16 Years & Over / Parents / Volunteers / Beginner Coaches and everyone in between. The Foundation Award is the introductory award for coaches of Gaelic Games. The course is aimed at beginner coaches/parents and will enable participants to assist a coach in the organisation of activities to further enhance the players skills at practice and/or at home.

The course covers four key modules, as well as introductory and conclusion modules. These four modules are:

- Introduction to Games
- Skill Development
- Movement Skills
- Coaching Children, Youths and Adults

This course is very worthwhile and we would encourage anyone to take part. It's a great way to get to know different components of coaching that can help you as a coach and player and also as a parent as it enables you to gain a different perspective on the basic levels of coaching, so that you can help your child when they practice at home.

We profile another one of our young players in Ciaran Dalton. Ciaran attends Pearl River High School and he is an extremely capable student and sportsman. Ciaran had a great few months recently playing for Rockland GAA at CYC, as well as New York Fèile Football and Hurling Teams in Ireland. He also played a key role with his New York Red Bulls team in reaching the Semi Final of the ICC Futures Tournament in Florida, which was televised live on ESPN. Representative team from all over the United States came up against some of the best youth teams from Europe; Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Celtic and Atlético Madrid to name a few.

Research shows the many benefits of playing multiple sports and Ciaran certainly fits into that category as he currently plays Gaelic Football and Hurling for us, as well as playing Soccer for New York Red Bull's and Basketball. In his own words "I think it is definitely important to play more than one sport when you are a kid because it helps you keep more active, meet more people, and prevents injures from doing the same thing over and over."

Being so young and involved in so many sports, there's always the chance that school work can become neglected. Not with Ciaran though as he goes onto say "It is sometimes challenging to manage your time with school, family, friends, and sport because I am at soccer practice almost every night of the week but school always has to come first so I try to do my homework and study as soon as I get home so I do well in school. On the weekends is usually when I get to be with my friends or do things with my family."

He is also always willing to learn and improve. As soon as he got back from the ICC Tournament in Florida he was desperate to take part in our 3 Day Player Development Camp, where our young players players had the pleasure of learning from Joe McMahon, Pat Murray, Mickey Coleman, Micky Quigg and Ryan Daly.

Ciaran also gives back to the club in getting involved in our RGAA Summer Camp as a Volunteer and Young Coach for the second year in a row.

We are so fortunate to have so many of our young people giving their time to make sure our Summer Camp and other events become a success.

Ciaran would like to thank all his coaches, team mates, friends and especially his family for all the support they give him

Our very own jet setting Ladies Footballer Kelly Ann Henry has been making waves across the water in Ireland. This is no surprise to everyone who knows Kelly Ann. She is currently getting ready for an All Ireland Intermediate Semi Final against Tyrone. Our loss has been Curry GAA Sligo's gain. Kelly, who studies Physio Therapy at UCD, was due to be back in New York this summer. However an invitation from Sligo Ladies Football manager Paddy Henry to join the panel was too good an opportunity to turn down. After speaking with her family she decided to stay in Ireland. Her debut was against Roscommon in the Connacht Final and she has since played against Longford and Wicklow respectively.
Kelly Ann is a great role model. She was one of our lead coaches in our RGAA Summer Camp in 2017 and it's great to see her younger sisters, Mary Kate and Sinead, following on her footsteps at this years Camp and it was great to see her when she visited Camp this year during a short break home. Kelly Ann was an integral member of our Junior Ladies Team when they clinched the Junior Title in 2017. Although we'd love to have her back we're extremely proud of her representing Sligo LGFA. Everyone in Rockland GAA, New York and beyond would like to wish Kelly Ann and the entire Sligo LGFA panel all the best this Saturday in their All Ireland Intermediate Semi Final against Tyrone. The game throws in at 4pm in Ballyshannon and will be shown live on the Ladies Gaelic Football Facebook Page. Thank you to the Sligo Weekender Newspaper for the piece in the picture and massive thanks to Kelly Ann's extended family, friends, Curry GFC, Sligo LGFA and UCD for looking after our girl

Final Day of our first RGAA Development Camp. The weather did affect us but thankfully we managed to get outside before the Thunderstorm struck. The players went through Health & Nutrition, Kicking/Shooting and Video Analysis Workshops. Owen videoed the players on the Coaches Eye App and they got to analyze their own performance. The players were also paired up with each player taking it in turns to perform the exercises/skills and observing their partner giving them feedback on what they thought they were doing well. The players also received their 1/4 zips. Thank you to Alissa Dempsey and the Artwill Group for the quick delivery. We will be emailing all the resources from Camp to the parents for our participants to use at home. Again huge thanks to our guest coaches, tutors and speakers Pat Murray, Mickey Coleman, Joe McMahon, Ryan Daly, Micky Quigg and Brian Pearson for his help too. The NY U14 Hurling did NY proud this evening playing a blitz in Tullaroan. The display and standard of hurling from the boys impressed Kilkenny Legends Tommy Walsh and JJ Delaney who were guest selectors on the sideline. The lads played against St. Lachtains, Fenians and Tullaroan. They made it to the cup final where they drew with Tullaroan. The two teams were very evenly matched and they battled hard and pulled on everything that didn’t come up. Great hospitality received from the Kilkenny County Board and the Tullaroan Club the last 2 days. Well done to all the coaches and players, especially Ciara, Caolan, Killian, Declan and Caimhin.

The New York Colleges team headed off to Ireland creating histroy to compete in the Corn na MacLéinn All Ireland Higher Education Championships this weekend for the very first time. All the best to the management and players, especially our own James Linnane, Ronan Curry, Mike Diskin & Joseph Michalak. They faced UU Maguee in their Corn na MacLéinn Colleges Semi Final. The lads lads lost narrowly 2-8 to 10 points. That fought hard and done themselves and everyone proud. On another day they would have came away with the win. They now play Royal College of Surgeons in tomorrow's Shield Final. All the best to Magee Vs Liverpool Hope in tomorrow's final.

An absolute privilege hosting Wexford GAA's Lee Chin, Tom Dempsey, Adrian Fenlon & Davy Fitzgerald this evening. The lads spoke about their experiences as players, supporters, coaches, periodisation. So much great advice to our young players, coaches & parent. The boys were presented with RGAA mementos to mark their visit. Huge thanks to everyone who came to see the Wexford lads. All the best the rest of the year.

Our Games Development Officer, Owen Mooney was in attendance at the GAA Games Development Conference, which took place last weekend in GAA HQ, Croke Park, Dublin. The two days were packed with outstanding presentations from internationally renowned coaches and researchers. It was hugely beneficial weekend for Owen personally but also Rockland GAA as a club as we feel it is so important to keep trying to improve. There was plenty of learning to take back to Rockland GAA and having the pleasure of listening to John McGrath, Dr. Michael Whelan, Prof Anthony McDonnell, Pat Daly, Philip Kerr, Stuart Lancaster and Paul McGinley was fantastic. The weekend was also a massive opportunity to network and great to catch up again with top class people. We're hoping that we'll have a small Rockland GAA delegation at next year's Conference.
